happy anniversary!

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Three years ago today, I married the most beautiful woman I have ever met. I was the luckiest guy then, and I am still the luckiest guy now. It’s been the best three years of my life, and it’s only getting better with each passing day. It is an honor to be able to spend my life with my best friend, my equal, my wife.

Karen, I love you more then I can put into words .. here’s to growing old together.

nissan suspicious z

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Last night, as I was leaving the worst walmart super center in all of the world, I noticed a police patrol car behind me. The officer followed me out of the walmart parking lot, west on university drive and into a gas station parking lot. I was unaware that I had done anything wrong, so I wasn’t really paying any attention to the officer at this point. I went  about my business about to get some over priced gasoline and head home. The officer gets out of his patrol car and approaches me .. odd. I started to feel a little nervous, wondering what I could have done to warrant attention from the police at 10:30 PM on a Sunday night. I say “good evening officer, may I be of some assistance to you?” to which he responds that he needs to see my drivers license and insurance.

Wait a minute, you need to see what? .. why do you need to see those items? …. I was floored by his next statement. The officer informed me that I am driving a “suspicious vehicle”. Without even thinking about what I should do or say, I responded, “No I don’t, I drive a Nissan 350z .. it doesn’t say suspicious  anywhere on it.”  … thankfully his radio went off and he had to respond to a call of more importance, probably fresh donuts at krispy-kreme.

I still have no idea why I was considered suspicious .. but it sure felt good to pwn that cop.

So much work has been done to the house, I am literally amazed Karen and I were able to do it. We did recruit some of karen’s friends to help with painting, and I recruited a friend to help move some heavy stuff. So we didn’t do it all by ourselves, but most of the work did fall on us to do. I think now, even though not complete, karen and I have something we can truly feel proud of. We put our all into this house, and now the floors are being installed, we can really see what all we did and how really great it looks.

The wood seems a little dark in this image, it’s actually much lighter .. but still looks great either way. I have added tons of more images to the gallery if you care to view them, there are a few shots where you can see what the wood color actually is. The installers have been doing a kick ass job, and told me today that they should be done by saturday. So we should we moved in, within the next two weeks I hope.

Now that the house is as done as it can be, it’s time to make plans for moving. I have aquired the bare necessities in preparation for our move; by that I mean Direct TV HD and 6MB ADSL. This weekend a few friends are coming by for free beer and to help us pack, fun times ahead. This time around though, you will not see me lugging boxes all day. I am going to hire some movers to do it for me. I’ve met my hard work quota for the year.

thats it in a nutshell.

christmas is in the bag

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

This is the year when my wife asked me what I wanted for christmas, I exclaimed “Wii want to play!!”; and so began the quest for the ever elusive $249 Wii. We both thought it was going to be difficult, if not impossible .. until I just randomly stopped by the ghettomart.

It just so happened that they had one! I bought it without even thinking. Karen was mad that I beat her at finding our prey, but she will forget about it over a game of zelda.

home network upgrade

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I did a little ebaying today and purchased myself a new switch for the home network. I decided it was time to upgrade to a managed layer 2 switch. I will now be able to setup my monitoring gear properly and can retire the inline hub/tap. So what did I get? I picked up an Allied Telesyn AT8000S/16 for $68 with free shipping. woot.

if NASA reads my blog, you should too!

Looking through last months logs, I noticed an entry from a google search that made me giggle like a little school girl.

198.116.xx.xx - - [09/Oct/2007:14:55:56 -0600] “GET /09-17-2007/behind-the-scenes-with-snort-part-2/ HTTP/1.1″ 200 6712 “http://www.google.com/search?q=waldo.file&hl=en&start=20&sa=N” “Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.7) Gecko/20070914 Firefox/2.0.0.7″

I obfuscated the IP for obvious reasons, but suffice to say a traceroute of the IP, reveals:

14 border.hcn.hq.nasa.gov (198.116.xx.xx) 87.622 ms 84.963 ms 84.978 ms

I know, I know .. who cares right? It’s just a random person at a random place googling for something random. In this specific case however, it’s someone from NASA; searching for specific information about snort/barnyard. I don’t know why it’s important to me, but having someone from an agency that is primarily run by geeks and nerds find my site possibly useful, makes me all warm inside. (hopefully that didn’t make you vomit inside your mouth.)
